Irvin High School Football Field

Subject: Irvin High School Football Field

Dear Friends of Irvin High School,

Have you been by Irvin High School lately? We have a great new addition to our football stadium. We now have turf. Please come by and visit our new field. The Irvin community believes we have the most beautiful high school venue in the city to watch a sporting event with the sun setting behind the Franklin Mountains as our backdrop.

Although the school district paid for the turf, Irvin High School has to pay for the coloring of the end zones as well as the lettering in the end zones. In making the decision regarding the coloring and lettering of the new field I felt it was important that Irvin High School have the best field and second to no one else in the district. Our community and especially our students deserve a first class facility. The total cost of the project is $15,800. The girls soccer program has donated $1,000. The boys soccer program has donated $1,000. The football program has donated $2,500. Irvin High School has donated $1,000. The programs who will use the field have donated a total of $5,500. We still owe $10,300.

The Irvin High School donation comes from the campus general fund, which in my nine years has been allocated to assist with any and all expenditures not covered by the district. Throughout the school year this fund is there to help our students. If this fund is depleted I can no longer assist students as I have done in the past. I need your help.

I am asking you, “Friends of Irvin High School”, for your help. As principal of Irvin High School I am donating $1,000. We need to raise the remaining $9,300 by July 30, 2009. All individuals and businesses contributing to the fund raising campaign will be recognized in the football programs for the 2009 season. All contributors will receive a special recognition in our 50th anniversary special edition football program to be printed for our homecoming game on October 16. Additionally, those donating $500 or more will be recognized individually at the dedication of “Tony Shaw Field” on September 18 and receive a plaque for their donation. We need your help and any amount will be greatly appreciated.

Irvin High School is currently celebrating their golden anniversary year in 2009. Our students and community deserve the very best. Please help us have a first class facility and allow me to continue to assist students in need at Irvin High School.

Donations should be addressed to:

INTRO BY - - JoAnn (Joie) Campbell Davis
Fellow classmates and Irvin Rocket Enthusiasts, it would be greatly appreciated if each one of you could support the I.A.A. (Irvin Alumni Association). I know the Association can count on you....each of you, because..."You Are Irvin High School's Finest!" So, "Here ye, Here ye, the dues are coming, the dues are coming!" The Irvin Alumni Association ' Wants YOU' to help keep things going. So please, please 'Show Us The Money!" Dues are $10.00 per year and this takes care of things you are about to read about!

And now, to explain the Association to you all......"Here's Mickey!" Go Get 'Em Rockets!

LETTER FROM - - Mickey Wilhite
In order to maintain the Irvin Alumni & Ex-Student Association's main goal of providing scholarships and recognizing Outstanding Exes, your help is needed.

Exes from all years are encouraged to join, to keep your Alumni association active and able to continue to realize its goals. Membership dues are and always have been $10.00 per year and can be mailed to Irvin Alumni Association c/o Irvin High School, 9465 Roanoke Dr., El Paso, Texas, 79924. Your tax deductible donations to the Scholarship Fund can be mailed to this address also.

The Alumni Association does have a permanent endowment fund with the EPISD, but it realizes very little in the way of interest, which is all that can be drawn off to be used for scholarships. An attempt will be made to regain control of these funds, so they can be invested at a higher return, either in CD's, money-market funds, or whatever will earn the most interest.

The new school address for the Irvin Alumni Association is IrvinAlumni@yahoo.com

An attempt should be made in the not-too-distant future, perhaps around homecoming '08, to have a formal meeting of the Alumni Association to elect officers.

Please forward this message to any alumni contacts that you have.

The Alumni Association thanks you in advance for any help you can provide

Here's a brief history of the Irvin Alumni and Ex-Students Association. It was copied from the Administration/History Page on Irvin's Official WebSite. http://irvin.episd.org/

In 1977, the Irvin Alumni and Ex-Students Association was formed after a fruitful reunion of the class of '67. The association strives to continue the spirit and sense of pride surrounding school activities. The Alumni association has done much to help decorate the campus with Rocket-pride filled memorabilia. The association has constructed useful mementos such as the podium that is used by speakers, students, and instructors at assemblies and programs.

In the spring of 1989, Mickey Wilhite, the President of the Alumni Association at the time, collaborated with President Ronald Reagan to obtain a two stage Nike Hercules guided missile. It was donated from the Red Stone Arsenal in Alabama, is 39 feet, 10 inches in length, and originally weighed 10,700 pounds. The U.S. Army at Fort Bliss and White Sands Missile Range has supplied the other rockets displayed on campus.

In 1992, the Irvin Alumni and Ex-Students Association went a step further to help honor and award scholarships to hard-working students. To ensure that there will be monies to award students in the future, the association established a $15,000.00 Permanent Endowment Scholarship Fund with the El Paso Independent School District that year. So far, they have awarded an estimated 50 scholarships to well deserving students. This permanent endowment was obtained by a few members of the Alumni doing numerous fundraisers such as several Amigo Airsho's, selling roses for Mother's Day, membership drives, etc.

First Alumnus

The first person to graduate from Irvin was Janice Burchfield Brooks. Her graduation ceremony took place on January 21, 1960, and we've never had a mid-year graduation ceremony since.

In the beginning

Irvin High School opened in September of 1959. It was named for Dr. O.C. Irvin, Dr. E.H. Irvin, and Mr. C.M. Irvin. All three of these gentlemen made great contributions to the El Paso School Board, and their combined efforts spanned a 76 year time period.
